Research Activity 7
Systems level integration & Evaluation

'...Key Experiments are derived from the research activities, and serve as integration platforms for their results. Each Key experiment focuses on one or more fundamental abilities of a cognitive robot...'

The COGNIRON project is organised along 6 Research Activities. In order to demonstrate their outcomes and results in an integrated fashion, a seventh Research Activity (Research Activity 7) has been introduced.

Research Activity 7 is a specific project activity, as it concentrates on the integration of several robot functions and their experimentation and evaluation in the context of well-defined scenarios, or Key Experiments, that enable to exhibit the cognitive capacities and to assess progress.

This project activity is four-fold as it consists on the one hand of the specification of the Key Experiments, and on the other hand of the set up, implementation, demonstration and assessment of the three of them, using different robot platforms.

The three Key Experiments are briefly presented below :

The Robot Home Tour
The Curious Robot
Learning Skills and Tasks

IPA is the partner in charge of the overall RA7 activity, and each Key Experiment has an identified leader, responsible for the implementation of one of the three scenarii :

Key Experiment 1 - The Robot Home Tour

Lead partner : UniBi

Objectives

The Key Experiment 'Robot Home Tour' stresses the informational human-robot interaction to learn the geometry, topology, of the environments and its artefacts, geometry and the identity and location of objects and their spatio-temporal relations.

The following abilities will be implemented, demonstrated and assessed on a robot platform :

basic human-robot dialogue (related to RA5)
recognition of a person and basic (i.e. pointing, waving) gestures (related to RA1, RA2, RA3, )
active perception (related to RA5)
acquire geometrical maps of the environment, instantiation of the concept of rooms (related to RA5)
navigation in an un-instrumented home setting : through doors, around dynamic obstacles (related to RA5)
autonomous decision for control and coordination of own functions (related to RA6)

Key Experiment 2 - The Curious Robot

Lead partner : LAAS

Objectives

The Key Experiment 'The Curious Robot' stresses perceptional skills of the robot to acquire knowledge about the locations and properties of objects and their spatio-temporal relations.

'The Curious Robot' experiment will be a framework for research on cognitive capacities, and more precisely 'learning', 'taking initiative', 'intentionality attribution and manifestation' and 'curiosity', as the manifestation of cognition.

The following abilities will be implemented, demonstrated and assessed on a robot platform :

recognition of a number of known (learned) objects (related to RA5)
locate and identity a person (related to RA2, RA3, )
collaboration with humans (related to RA3, RA6 )

Key Experiment 3 - Learning Skills and Tasks

Lead partner : UniKarl

Involved partners : UniKarl, EPFL, LAAS

Objectives

The Key Experiment 'Learning Skills and Tasks' stresses the learning and reasoning capabilities for the robot to acquire knowledge about goals and tasks employing the example of laying out the table.

The following skills will be implemented, demonstrated and assessed on a robot plaform :

Learning goals from observations (related to RA4, RA5, RA6 )
Reproduction of the goal for arbitrary starting conditions (related to RA4, RA6 ).
